The Texas A&M Aggies football program is at somewhat of a crossroads this offseason, as coach Jimbo Fisher and his squad attempt to put in the rear-view mirror the 5-7 (2-6 SEC) effort from a season ago. With a new recruiting class added to returning players, Fisher and Co. hope a little more experience along the offensive line and quarterback position can catapult the Aggies to an SEC West title and beyond.

Before practice on Wednesday, Fisher spoke to the media about the upcoming season and some expectations for position groups and players. And his excitement for the time of year was obvious.

“Very excited. It’s a great time of the year," Fisher said. "It’s my favorite time of the year. Ball is starting. It’s time to get back out to the field. I’m excited to see all the guys and all the work they’ve put in this summer.”

One of the potential areas of concern is the offensive line, but with returning starters and depth through the new recruiting class, Fisher has few worries.

“The offensive line is one of the most communicative positions as there is… Fronts move, blitzes come, and calls are made. It’s not that they don’t know. It’s communicating it down the line when 100,000 yelling. When you have younger guys, it’s always a challenge.

“It’s a lot of guys with experience… I feel very good with that, and they should be ready to go.”

With the poor record last season, there's a lot of pressure on the high-paid head coach for the team to bounce back and perform well this season, particularly with the level of talent that's on the roster. And Fisher says it comes down to one thing.

“Everything you do in football is about one thing. It’s about execution. Everything comes to a point… You don’t practice things until you do them right. You practice until you can’t do them wrong, and they become habits.

“I think we made tremendous progress in doing the little things and paying attention to them… We’ll see once we get to the practice fields, and at the end of the day, that’s what it all comes down to.”

Fisher also has high praise for the quarterback position, as Conner Weigman now has the experience gained from last season. Even though Fisher has not named a starter for 2023, Weigman seems like the logical choice.

“He had eight touchdowns with no interceptions. He was making plays when he was making the right decisions, which was very good. At the end of the day, quarterbacking is about making the right decisions and accuracy.

“He won’t be hesitant to throw that ball in some areas where you can make plays because he’s got some guys who can go and get it. He came out of spring well, so hopefully, he’ll go into the fall well.”
