Could Aggies Lose 5-Star CB Kobe Black to Rival Longhorns?
The new college football season is just weeks away, but Texas A&M Aggies football coach Jimbo Fisher continues to be hot on the recruiting trail for future rosters. And now the path seems even hotter as the Aggies hosted five-star corner Kobe Black in College Station two weeks ago.
Black is ranked by On3 as the No. 25 player nationally for the class of 2024, the No. 3 cornerback, and the No. 6 player from the state of Texas. The Connally (Waco, TX) High School product is high on the recruiting list for A&M, but so far all predictions have him committing to arch-rival Texas.
On3 reported on Saturday that the Longhorns have a "healthy lead" over the Aggies and other programs at this point in the process. On3 also reported that the Oregon Ducks, Ohio State Buckeyes, and LSU Tigers are also strong in the running, which corresponds with Black's post on social media when he referenced his top five schools of Texas, LSU, Ohio State, Texas A&M, and Oregon.
A&M recruiters TJ Rushing and D.J. Durkin have their work cut out for them to swing Black's commitment the Aggies' way. Future SEC foe Oklahoma is also hot on Black's trail, as well as LSU, Ohio State, Alabama and Baylor.
The Aggies were able to give Black a promise of early playing time and a spot in the rotation. He reportedly was given a breakdown of the depth chart and where he would fall immediately upon arrival in College Station.
The 6-1, 190-pound Waco, Texas native is a multi-sport athlete who stars in basketball and track when he's not playing football. Last season he played double duty on both sides of the ball. While playing corner, he also played running back part-time where he ran for 337 yards and six touchdowns for Connally. While playing receiver, he amassed 305 yards and five touchdown catches.
As a sophomore, Black had 41 tackles and seven pass breakups. Those numbers were solid enough for him to be named the Waco Tribune’s Defensive Newcomer of the Year.
