When you're the son of a Super Bowl champion quarterback, expectations are placed on you. Especially when you decide to ply your craft at the same position. Such is the plight of Texas A&M quarterback Max Johnson. Johnson is entering his second season at A&M and is competing for the starting role with sophomore Conner Weigman.

Johnson said he and Weigman have a great relationship and have helped each other with learning the system. “I think he has done a great job of understanding the system. I think he’s really athletic. We learn from each other’s successes and mistakes. … We pick each other’s brains, talk off the field, and are able to understand offenses more from each other.”

Johnson transferred to A&M from LSU after the 2021 season, and credits coach Jimbo Fisher with helping him make the decision to return in 2023. "Me and my family had about 15 days to make that decision. Coach Fisher had a lot to do with it. The culture of the team and culture of Texas A&M is what played a big part in me coming here.”

The Aggies will have a new offensive philosophy and coordinator this coming season, as Bobby Petrino takes over play-calling duties, and Johnson has become a fan. “I love working with Coach Petrino. I think he has done a great job of bringing accountability to players and our offense. I think it has been a great fall camp so far.”

With a father who played in the NFL for 15 seasons, won a Super Bowl, and was named to two Pro Bowls, Johnson uses him as a resource for his career. “I talk to him all the time. He has done a good job of making sure I don’t get too high or too low. I love my dad. He has done a great job of teaching me, not just how to throw the ball, but how to be a good quarterback.”

It's still uncertain if Johnson or Weigman will start in Week 1 against New Mexico on Sept. 2, but either way, the Aggies will be in good hands. And Johnson expects to keep getting better.
