Where's Aggies Jimbo Fisher in Top 25 College Coaches?
Jimbo Fisher just completed his fifth season in College Station, during a tenure that most would describe as disappointing. After compiling a 39-21 overall record with A&M over those five seasons the Aggies seem nowhere closer to a College Football Playoff appearance than they were before he arrived.
The Athletic recently compiled its annual list of the top 25 college coaches, and after appearing last year at No. 7, Fisher made the list this season at No. 17.
Some might find it surprising to find Fisher's name appear anywhere on a top 25 list, but the reason for his appearance is outlined below:
17. Jimbo Fisher, Texas A&M: The Aggies are paying him a fortune and so far he's been a monumental disappointment. Fisher's on his sixth season in College Station and really only has one good year to show for it: a 9-1 record during the pandemic in 2020. Outside of that, his record in the SEC is 15-17. If you consider his last year at FSU, when his team went 5-6 and 3-5 in the ACC before his departure, that's one good year out of his last six. He's only still in the top 25 because he led FSU to a national title in 2013 in the middle of a run in which he had four top-10 seasons over a five-year stretch. He's given the keys of his offense to Bobby Petrino in hopes that the Aggies can get a desperately needed jump-start.
Fisher is under contract with the Aggies through 2031 after signing an extension prior to the 2021 season. Many are now questioning that decision.
Fisher has made several coaching changes for 2023, including giving up the offense to Bobby Petrino, hoping that will give the team a boost for the future.
Time will tell.
