Aggies Land Jackson State LB Transfer Jurriente Davis

Texas A&M Aggies football has added another defensive prospect to the roster for the upcoming season in Jackson State transfer Jurriente Davis.
In this story:

Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher said the Aggies would be attentive in adding depth at several positions in the second wave of the transfer portal period. On Thursday, they picked up another focal piece to the defense with starting-caliber potential.

Jackson State linebacker transfer Jurriente "JD" Davis officially announced his commitment to Texas A&M. Davis chose the Aggies over programs such as Kentucky, Louisville, Oklahoma and Colorado.

Davis visited College Station last week during the Aggies' Maroon and White game and immediately felt connected to the culture. He will have two years of eligibility remaining with the program and should fight for starting reps opposite senior standout Edgerrin Cooper.

A 6-1, 225-pound tackling machine, Davis started all 13 games for the Tigers last season and finished third on the team in tackles (58), and fourth in tackles for loss (7.5). Prior to working with now Buffaloes' coach Deion Sanders, Davis also made stops at Middle Tennessee and Hutchinson C.C.

A former starter for the Blue Raiders, Davis registered 68 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, and two fumble recoveries. He also was regarded as one of the top defensive prospects in the portal.

With the addition of Davis, the Aggies now have added four potential defensive starters via the portal since last season's 5-7 finish. A&M picked the commitments of cornerbacks Tony Grimes (North Carolina) and Sam McCall (Florida State) before the start of offseason workouts. Boston College defensive back Josh DeBerry committed to the program earlier this week

A&M also picked up the commitment of Rice fullback Jerry Johnson. Johnson is expected to play a variety of positions under first-year offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino's personnel in 2023.

The Aggies open the regular season at Kyle Field against New Mexico on Sept. 2.
