Welcome to the Big 12, Newbies. The four new teams in the Big 12 – BYU, Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF - have now lost their first-ever conference games. Last week, it was Houston who lost at home to TCU. In Week 4, the other three teams experienced losses; however, unlike Houston, all had somewhat competitive games.

Cincinnati welcomed No. 16 Oklahoma to Nippert Stadium. Yes, the Bearcats lost by two touchdowns, but this game was a 4-point game halfway through the third quarter. And Cincy held Dillon Gabriel and the team to only 20 points.

BYU and UCF, both undefeated coming into the week, each traveled to the state of Kansas. And each game was an exciting back-and-forth until it wasn’t. Kansas pulled away and got the win over BYU. And the defending Big 12 champs, K-State, held off UCF.

Kansas Jayhawks running back Daniel Hishaw Jr. (20) is tackled by Brigham Young Cougars linebacker Ace Kaufusi (18) during the second half at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.

No. 3 Texas had no trouble in Waco. Houston finished off its nonconference schedule with a win over Sam Houston State. TCU won the 102nd Battle for the Iron Skillet over SMU. And West Virginia defeated Texas Tech in Morgantown. Lastly, Okie State lost at home against Iowa State.

So, here we are, one-third the way through the season. All nonconference games have been played. Both Baylor and Texas Tech were projected to be in the top half of the league and are at 1-3. West Virginia, expected to come in last, is at 3-1 with wins over Pitt and Tech. Neal Brown’s only loss was to a No. 7 Penn State. And Kansas is one of three undefeated teams. Buckle up, folks. This conference ride for the next two months will be a crazy one!
