The Tennessee Volunteers' magical run in Omaha has come to an end. They once again ran into the LSU Tigers, one of the nation's best-hitting teams with a premium pitching staff. The Vols played six games dating back to the regionals, splitting them at 3-3. They bested Southern Miss in a best-of-three series, lost to LSU, defeated Stanford, and then ran into the Tigers again. The Stanford win was their first College World Series victory since 2001.

Tennessee starting pitcher Drew Beam had a shaky start in the first inning and was sitting at 35 pitches a few batters into the second inning. He settled in and began dealing against a loaded LSU roster filled with all-conference batters. He managed to make it through 5 2/3 of the game before getting relieved ahead of the sixth inning. Coming into action, many would have predicted this would have been a high-scoring one; both teams are in the top-15 nationally in home runs. However, that couldn't have been further from reality.

Tennessee had four batters hitting .300 or higher entering play, giving them one of the top offenses remaining. LSU starting pitcher Nate Ackenhausen had one of those games, though. He had a fantastic year on the mound and continued his winning ways, keeping the ball in play and giving those behind him an easy job. Ultimately, the loss puts a sour ending on what was an otherwise strong season for Tennessee. They fought through adversity at the beginning of the season and lived up to massive preseason expectations.
