Maui Ahuna Gets Drafted By San Francisco Giants
Tennessee shortstop Maui Ahuna earned a phone call from the San Francisco Giants, who selected him with the 117th overall pick on Monday. Ahuna was the second Vol off the board after Chase Dollander was picked No. 9 on Sunday. Ahuna came from Hawaii and started his college career, like Dollander, in a place other than Knoxville.
Ahuna started in Lawrence with the Kansas Jayhawks, where he raked at the plate. In 2021, he hit .316 and backed that up with .396 the next season. This comes after hitting .531 as a senior at Hilo High School. After his sophomore year, he transferred to Tennessee. Although the SEC is a much bigger beast than the Big 12, he picked up right where he left off. He hit .316 as a junior for the Vols with eight home runs and 42 batted in.
Looking forward to Ahuna’s future, scouts like the punch the smaller player packs in his swing. Some scouts see 15-20 home run upside from the left-handed hitter, according to MLB.com, even with his 6-1, 170-pound size. They also like his abilities defensively, which is extremely important at the shortstop position. In addition to his body control and arm, they like his speed, too. It will likely take some time for Ahuna to reach the levels he is capable of, but in baseball, patience is the name of the game.
