Detroit Lions Working On Contract Extension With Jared Goff
The NFL quarterback dominoes fall every offseason, and occasionally multiple fall in one location. The Detroit Lions are investing a lot under center this offseason, as they recently spent pick No. 68 on Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker. Additionally, reports confirm the team is working on a contract extension with starting quarterback Jared Goff.
General manager Brad Holmes appeared on 97.1 The Ticket on Tuesday morning and shared with the radio that the team is working through details on a Goff deal. Goff revived his career in the Motor City during the 2022 season, throwing for 4,438 yards and 29 touchdowns. Detroit finished 9-8 and ended the season on a high note, defeating the rival Green Bay Packers, eliminating them from playoff contention, and sending legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers on to the New York Jets.
The timing of the entire thing is slightly puzzling. Holmes is verbally and financially backing his starting quarterback but drafted one of the oldest signal callers in recent draft history. Hooker likely wouldn't compete for starting snaps this season, but a long-term extension for Goff clouds the long-term future as well.
Stacking talent and competition at the most critical position in the sport is important, but Detroit's moves are worth monitoring. Goff is capable of playing winning football and is a proven in this league; people will pay for that. However, Hooker's future is directly linked to Goff and how long he ends up staying in Detroit.
