Eric Berry Named To Tennessee Sports Hall Of Fame
On Wednesday, the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame announced one final member of its 2023 class: former Tennessee Volunteer safety Eric Berry. The class of 2023 has 12 members, including Berry and Volunteer defensive lineman John Henderson, as well as Olympic Gold Medalist Tianna Madison, who ran track at Tennessee. Inductions will be on Saturday, July 22, at the Omni Downtown Nashville.
At Tennessee, Eric Berry was a star from the get-go. As a freshman, he won SEC Freshman of the Week honors multiple times, and he received various freshman honors at the conclusion of the season, including SEC Defensive Freshman of the Year by Sporting News. He was even named to the overall All-SEC Second Team by the coaches and the Associated Press. In his sophomore season, he was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year by the coaches and the Associated Press, and in his junior season, he took home the Thorpe Award as the nation’s best defensive back. Throughout his three years in Knoxville, he had 245 total tackles from the safety position, 14 interceptions, and three sacks. He took back three of the interceptions for touchdowns.
Eric Berry went on to have an illustrious NFL career. He was selected fifth overall by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2010. He played nine years with the Chiefs, totaling 445 combined tackles, 14 interceptions (five for touchdowns), five-and-a-half sacks, four forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. Berry was a five-time Pro Bowler and a three-time First Team AP All-Pro. Most impressively, after being diagnosed with cancer during the 2014 season, he won his battle, returned for the 2015 season, and went on to play through 2018. Eric Berry is definitely a Vol For Life and a Tennessee sports legend.
