Evaluating Tennessee's Looming Quarterback Battle
The looming quarterback battle is one of the biggest storylines heading into the spring season for the University of Tennessee. Two great options are there for the Volunteers. Freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava came in during Orange Bowl prep, enrolling and practicing early.
Joe Milton III was at the helm of the victory in that Orange Bowl. Head coach Josh Heupel and his staff have had many conversations with the two signal callers. Which one will secure the starting job between the two in the Fall? We look at the pair before spring football Practice at Rocky Top.
When it comes to size, there is a huge difference between Joe Milton and Nico Iamaleava. Despite being one inch shorter than the 6-6 Iamaleava, Milton holds a 45-pound advantage at 245 pounds. Of course, with an SEC strength and nutrition program, Iamaleava will likely pack on a few pounds through his time at Knoxville.
When watching the tape, a few takeaways can be made. With the veteran experience perhaps playing a part, Milton seems to have a bit bigger of an arm. Iamaleava shows amazing touch on many deep passes, but Milton holds the edge regarding a pure cannon. Iamaleava seems to be more accurate when it comes to touch and precision. One thing for certain is that both can fill a highlight tape.
While Milton has the veteran experience on his side and an encouraging showing while standing in for Hendon Hooker, Iamaleava is deemed a generational quarterback prospect. The California kid enters spring ball hungry and ready, having already been transitioned to life at Rocky Top. One thing's for sure. The quarterback room is bound to buzz over the next few weeks as spring ball ensues.
