Hendon Hooker Gets Strong Look From Multiple NFL Teams
Ryan Fowler of The Draft Network reported Tuesday that Hooker has met “extensively” with the Raiders, Panthers, Giants, Saints, and Cowboys. The quarterback is limited in what he can physically show teams, coming off of his ACL injury, but he is expected to be a full go for training camp, wherever he lands.
With the injury, Hooker needs to focus on how he interviews and talks to teams, in addition to working on getting back to full strength. The interview process and the impressions that quarterbacks make on teams are always important, even for healthy quarterbacks.
The franchises listed would offer different outlooks for the beginning of Hooker’s career track if he were to land there. The Raiders are in a limbo period after releasing long-time starter Derek Carr. This would give Hooker a chance to compete as a starter. In Carolina, three quarterbacks threw at least 100 passes last year, but they don’t seem in love with any of their options.
It will be interesting to see if Matt Corral gets a chance to win the job long-term after missing all of his rookie season due to injury, but again, this is a wide-open quarterback competition. The Giants have a big decision to make with Daniel Jones and whether they want to move forward with him as the franchise quarterback, but those questions will likely be answered by draft day.
In New Orleans, both Jameis Winston and Andy Dalton saw time last year, but just like some of the other teams mentioned, the Saints don’t seem overly committed to either.
They are rumored to be in the Derek Carr sweepstakes, but again, there is plenty of room to compete and, possibly more so than in other environments, a chance to learn from veterans. Lastly, Dallas would likely be more of a backup role, but then again, that was the original plan for current starter Dak Prescott. It will be interesting to see which teams develop a stronger interest in Hendon Hooker and which new teams enter the fray in the coming weeks.
