Putting Tennessee Combine Results into Context

We are almost done with the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine, and the Vols have put up some impressive numbers. Where do they stack up?
In this story:

The Volunteer product making the biggest pre-combine headlines was wide receiver Jalin Hyatt. Hyatt was targeting an astounding 4.29-second 40-yard dash, which would have been the position's seventh-fastest time in combine history. He may have been disappointed in his time of 4.40, but even still, that put him in sixth place out of 43 runners at the position so far.

Additionally, it is not as if speed is all Hyatt has going for his game. He may have been looking for more, but in context, sixth is nothing to be ashamed of, especially when none of the receivers ahead of him are expected to be selected before him.

On Thursday, Byron Young ran a 4.43-second 40-yard dash. Impressive enough itself, especially when looking at the defensive line leaderboard, where he sits second behind only Georgia's Nolan Smith. This result looks even better when we look back at the history of the drill at the position.

Young's 4.43-second time is the fourth highest of all defensive linemen at the combine since 2003, behind just Amare Barno of Virginia Tech last year, the aforementioned Smith and Montez Sweat of Mississippi State in 2019. Hopefully, for Young, this elite showing at the combine will boost his draft stock over the next few weeks.
