Tennessee Announces Homecoming Game
Tennessee announced the date and opponent for its annual homecoming game on Thursday. The Vols have picked the Nov. 4 matchup against UConn this year. The details of events have yet to be announced, but based on years past, it is safe to assume that the homecoming parade will take place on Friday the third, and there will be non-stop tailgates throughout Knoxville all weekend long. Last year’s homecoming weekend was the weekend of the UT Martin game on Oct. 22. Tennessee won 65-24.
The first homecoming was in 1916 on the weekend of the Vanderbilt game, a game that Tennessee won 10-6. The celebration continued through Monday because President Ayres declared it a holiday. Tennessee homecoming had become annual since 1925, except for 1943, when funds were put towards charity and war efforts.
The tradition of crowning a homecoming queen has been on and off throughout the history of the weekend, but nowadays, a horse circling the field and two F/A-18 Super Hornets flying over the stadium during the National Anthem have become a mainstay. There are a lot of big games to look forward to before Nov. 4, but per usual, homecoming weekend will be one of the most memorable weekends of the year.
