Tyler Buchner Announces Transfer Destination

Per his social media accounts, Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner has transferred to the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Alabama's spring game underscored a glaring need at quarterback. Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson have the ability, but neither has separated in an open competition. We knew it looked bleak after quarterback Bryce Young declared for the NFL Draft, but we may not have understood the full scope of the situation.

It was only a short time before Alabama head coach Nick Sabin took to the transfer portal to address the issue. He hired Notre Dame offensive coordinator Tommy Rees to the same position in Tuscaloosa this offseason and went back to South Bend to find his quarterback. Notre Dame signal caller Tyler Buchner entered the portal on Tuesday afternoon, took one visit to Alabama, and has now committed to the Crimson Tide.

Buchner had an impressive outing against South Carolina in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl but was forced out the door when Wake Forest transfer quarterback Sam Hartman landed at Notre Dame. Hartman was one of the most historic passers in ACC history, and Buchner was the odd man out. He threw for six touchdowns against eight interceptions in his two-year stint with the Irish.

He immediately becomes the leader in the clubhouse to win the starting job at Alabama. Saban wouldn't have gone to the portal unless he believed his squad legitimately needed a talent upgrade, and they got their guy in Buchner. He isn't the most intimidating gunslinger they have had in between the hash marks recently, but that could change with a productive offseason.
