Analyzing The Home-Court Advantage Of Thompson-Boling Arena
If there is one thing that has contributed to the Vols' winning success in basketball, it has been their exceptional play at home. In the past three seasons, Tennessee is 43-5 at home in Thompson-Boling Arena. Tennessee has also made the NCAA tournament in the past three seasons. The idea of the Volunteers playing at home greatly impacts the direction of the season. This has been the case in the past handful of seasons.
In 2022, head coach Rick Barnes had a lot of great things to say about the atmosphere in Thompson-Boling Arena. He said, "I know it's loud – I do. But when I first got here, I met Kevin Feltner, who's from here in East Tennessee, and he told me, 'I promise you'll find out that Tennessee has the best basketball fans in the country.' I do believe we've got the best home-court advantage – I do. I think our fans are great. I just told them that it's great to be a Tennessee Volunteer." It speaks volumes about Tennessee's home-court advantage when their head coach says great things about the crowd.
Those comments came shortly after a huge upset win against Auburn at home during the 2021-22 season. The Vols were a perfect 16-0 at home that season. The success from that season translated to 2022-23 with a near-perfect 14-2 record. With a .896 winning percentage in Knoxville since the beginning of the 2020 season, Tennessee has shown that the core of their success in basketball comes from the fans and home crowd they get to play in front of. This can push them into more postseason opportunities in the future. As long as the Vols are attempting to put a decent product on the floor each season, the home crowd and home environment will help push them to loads of winning.
