Santiago Vescovi Announces Return to Tennessee
It looks as if Tennessee guard Santiago Vescovi will have another farewell celebration after he announced on Tuesday he is returning for next season. He was one of six seniors celebrated before the Vols' regular season matchup against Arkansas this past season.
This really helps the Volunteers' depth in the backcourt, as Vescovi offers experience and really good shooting to the group. He averaged 12.5 points and 4,6 rebounds per game last season. He led the Vols in points per game. He also 37.0% from three, which was the best out of all starters last season.
Vescovi's rebounding was key last season as he improved greatly in that category. He rebounded at a much higher rate last year than in any of his four years in Knoxville. This dynamic change allowed him to evolve as a player.
This evolution will be key for next season when he is the true leader on a younger team. He will have a younger junior guard Zakai Zeigler most likely beside him, starting once he recovers from an ACL injury. Edwards, Freddie Dilione, and Jahmai Mashack are also all juniors or below next season.
Head coach Rick Barnes on Vescovi's return, "We're excited because he is excited...It gives us back a guy who has arguably been our most durable guy. He loves the University of Tennessee and Vol nation."
Clearly, Barnes is pumped for Vescovi's return to the floor. The Volunteers get a guard with lots of experience, lots of durability, and lots of versatility. This will be a huge help for the young guys up and coming in the program, as well as the team as a unit throughout the next basketball season.
