Tennessee wide receivers coach Kelsey Pope has been thorough in his second full recruiting cycle as a position coach. He signed two wideouts in the 2023 class, getting a strong haul but on a small scale. Head coach Josh Heupel is giving him more runway in the 2024 class, as the coaching staff agrees that they want four wide receivers in the cycle.

One of his targets is four-star wide receiver Amari Jefferson (Chattanooga, Tenn.), who has one of the most interesting recruitments in the country. Jefferson is committed to Tennessee for baseball but kept his options open when the Power-5 football offers began flowing in. Tennessee's staff ensured that they got in early and let Jefferson know that they want him to play both sports on Rocky Top. He's got the frame and athleticism they use in their system, making him an obvious take in this class.

While Tennessee has been among the top group for the entirety of this recruitment, Jefferson is considering other options. He's made a few recruitment cuts but finally announced his top three schools, along with a commitment date. He will decide between Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee on August 5. "Tennessee is the home-state school and it would be close to home," Jefferson told On3's Chad Simmons. "I like the staff a lot, their offense stands out and I would have great support staying in state."

It feels like the Vols are in a two-team race with Alabama. The Georgia Bulldogs got Jefferson in Athens on an official visit this summer and impressed, but Alabama and Tennessee have consistently had buzz over the past few months. We will learn more in the coming weeks, but Tennessee feels good about its chances.
