Joey Halzle Checks Out Daniel Calhoun's Scrimmage
College evaluators flocked to Walton High School on Thursday night to see several future Power-5 prospects. Walton and Roswell boast multiple future college contributors, none more namely than four-star offensive tackle Daniel Calhoun. The 6-6.5, 360-pound offensive lineman is down to Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas.
Tennessee offensive coordinator Joey Halzle was among the coaches in attendance. Halzle recently took the offensive coordinator job after his predecessor, Alex Golesh, took the USF head coach opening. Halzle has been hitting the trail in recent weeks, evaluating top targets, and is currently making his way through the state of Georgia. Calhoun played left tackle for the Raiders and was the most physically imposing player on the field. He flashed high-end technique on several reps in pass protection, though he only got two series with starting quarterback Jeremy Hecklinski, who he will be blocking for this season.
The Volunteers have done an excellent job of hosting several priority targets on unofficial visits this offseason, but that's phase one of recruiting. The coaching staff must centralize the top talent to one or two weekends during the summer to have those prospects feel what it could be like with elite players beside them. Tennessee is after several highly touted 2024 skill talents. Ryan Wingo, Mike Matthews, and more are all considering Tennessee, but they need offensive linemen to block for them. Calhoun is one of those players. He talked with Volunteer Country in October after a visit to Knoxville and thoroughly enjoyed it."Really, the coaching staff and the atmosphere," Calhoun said of what keeps leading him back to Knoxville. "That is really the main thing I like about Tennessee. The experience (Saturday night) was great. The offense did great. The defense did good, too. It was really good."
