Five-Star WR Ryan Wingo Announces Commitment Date
The Tennessee Volunteers already landed one wide receiver in the 2024 class, South Carolina four-star Braylon Staley. However, Tennessee wide receivers coach Kelsey Pope intends to take four targets in the class, and his work is far from over. One of his long-time priorities has been five-star wide receiver Ryan Wingo, who he offered in March 2022. The two have developed a strong relationship, and the Vols are a primary player for Wingo.
While Tennessee has been a constant atop his recruitment, there has been a lot of movement. Georgia crept into his top group after they landed prized quarterback recruit Dylan Raiola, and there was significant smoke between the Bulldogs and Wingo. Then, a recent official visit to Austin, Texas, put the Longhorns in the driver's seat. The in-state Missouri Tigers have also been a factor, so, to put it lightly, there are a bunch of teams who feel they have a good shot. They still have ample time for progress in his recruitment. Wingo previously expressed that he wants to make a winter decision and wasn't going to accelerate his timeline - he stayed true to his promise and set a commitment date.
On Friday, Rivals national recruiting director Adam Gorney reported that Wingo would commit on December 20, the first day of the early national signing period. 247Sports national recruiting analyst Greg Biggins confirmed the report with Wingo himself on Saturday. While attending the NIL Sports Summer Classic in California, Wingo told Biggins that he wants to make three official visits to Miami, Tennessee, and Texas A&M this fall. He made four official visits this summer to Georgia, Michigan, Missouri, and Texas but plans to take advantage of a July 1 rule change that allows prospects to officially visit an unlimited number of programs.
He ran a personal best 10.50-second 100-meter dash this offseason but told Biggins that he was nursing a leg injury all spring. "I really think I could have run in the 10.2 range if I didn’t get injured," Wingo explained. "I felt great coming into the season, but I feel good now, and I’ll be ready to go for my senior year." He measures in at 6-2 and 205 pounds, and running a 10.5 in the 100-meter is unheard of.
Tennessee has a strong shot at this one. They were the early favorite before things heated up, but they are still a constant in his recruitment. The coaching staff could have got him in on an official visit this summer but decided to save it for the fall to build momentum before his commitment date.
