Spring Prospects: Christian Garrett
Every spring brings a new batch of unfamiliar prospects to light. Prince Avenue Christian defensive lineman Christian Garrett is shaping up to be one of those prospects. When I last saw him in December, Garrett held two offers from Georgia Southern and UCF. He has now added five Power-5 offers in the past two weeks.
Garrett added an offer from Tennessee on Thursday afternoon after picking up a South Carolina offer on Wednesday. Major powers are beginning to pick up on his talents; sources have confirmed various high-major suitors are after Garrett. He has visited Georgia, Florida, and Georgia State this spring, a list that likely grows in the coming months.
He holds a lot of physical intangibles at 16 years old. Garrett has an 83-inch wingspan, which is ridiculous for a man of his stature. He posted an impressive sophomore campaign for Prince Avenue en route to a state championship but has several questions to answer before becoming a national recruit.
Prospect: Christian Garrett
P5 Offers: Tennessee, South Carolina, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech
Projected Position: 3-tech
Vitals: 6-4 and 286 lbs.
School: Prince Avenue Christian School (Bogart, Georgia)
Frame: There are no questions about Garrett's frame in college. He stood out on his sophomore tape against high-level competition. He reports that he has put on 25 pounds since the offseason began, a surefire tell that Garrett should have no trouble adjusting to the weight room. The only question I have is will he be comfortable using that frame as an asset?
Athleticism: Garrett's athletic progression determines his long-term ceiling. If he doesn't flash more athleticism in the next two years, it will make sense for him to put on more weight and kick even further inside. However, he could be a complete 3-tech if he can show burst off the line and one signature pass-rush move that allows him to rush the passer at an effective rate.
Instincts: Still learning the intricacies of defensive line play. Garrett is at his best when he gets to be a linear athlete and attacks downhill without much thought. He shows that he can read keys and process quickly but needs more reps at the high school level to continue growing. Currently, high school offenses can hinder his dominant flashes by incorporating an action fake or pulling a guard, catching Garrett in a pileup at the line of scrimmage.
Polish: Still a raw player that needs refinement before he reaches college. Garrett has several outcomes for what he could be at the college level. Some he can control, like continuing his consistent effort level, and others he cannot, like his athletic ceiling and how his frame develops. Garrett is still an SEC-level run defender that has a solid floor.
Bottom Line: Garrett is currently a top-150 evaluation with the chance to become a top-50 evaluation. His next two years at Prince Avenue will be crucial, as he must begin learning and deciding what he wants to be in college and potentially beyond.
Questions I Have: What does his frame look like in person? Is he consistently resetting the line of scrimmage in run defense? Has he developed a go-to pass-rush move? Is he an elite mover? How does he use his wingspan?
