With Peyton Lewis In The Fold, Vols Shift Their Focus To Boo Carter
Tennessee hosted its "865 Live" event this weekend and made major progress with several high-major prospects. They even landed a commitment from 2024 four-star running back Peyton Lewis. The coaching staff had been keyed in on Lewis for a while and was expecting him to announce this weekend. With Lewis in the fold for the 2024 cycle, everyone is wondering who the next to commit may be. The Vols seem to think it could be 2024 four-star athlete Boo Carter.
Carter is a Tennessee native that has stayed in the headlines for most of his high school career. He became the first Tennessee athlete to sign a NIL deal in high school, partnering with SUCKERPUNCH Gourmet in December. Carter has built a national brand, especially after major programs came calling. Colorado, Miami, and Michigan each made significant progress with him during select points, but the Vols have been the No. 1 contender for Carter for a long time. They were his first offer in May 2021 and have spent a ton of time building this relationship. Head coach Josh Heupel has been a primary factor in Carter's recruitment, staying in his ear throughout the high school season.
He was on campus for the "865 Live" event, and sources around the program feel good about how things went. Carter's recruitment has been held relatively close to the vest, but he could be making a decision soon. If he were to pick Tennessee, it would be as a defensive back. Volunteer Country projects Carter out to safety, as he has special athleticism and twitch.
Sports Illustrated Evaluation
"Carter's testing numbers are eye-popping. He runs a 4.39-second forty-yard dash, a 10.7-second 100-yard dash, and a 4.35-second shuttle. Those measurables are unrivaled across the country. His short-area quickness separates him. Carter has elite hip dexterity and ankle flexion, allowing him to change directions in various manners. The Tennessee native knows how to alter his approach based on his position. Carter has natural movement from the safety position. He diagnoses, attacks, breaks down while staying in his stance if necessary, then explodes again. The conversation between identifying and attacking is seamless for him." - January 2023
