5-star DE Williams Nwaneri Sets Commitment Date
The Tennessee Volunteers have long pursued five-star defensive end Williams Nwaneri and were even considered the leader at one point. The 6-foot-6, 265-pound defender took an official visit to Tennessee on June 16, 2023, and coming off that weekend, Tennessee had all the buzz. Things quickly shifted, and it felt like the Vols had no traction at all.
Georgia and Missouri got Nwaneri on official visits, which went exceedingly well. The Bulldogs were the No. 1 contender after he made the trip to Athens, Georgia, and he returned for an unofficial visit a few weeks later. Missouri is the in-state school and has been swinging in this one for a while. The two sides had a productive visit, and the Tigers are to be taken seriously. However, in the past week, there has been buzz around Tennessee. Defensive line coach Rodney Garner spent a long time developing a connection here and won't stop until Nwaneri signs a letter of intent, whether to Tennessee or another program.
The coaching staff won't have to wait long to hear Nwaneri's decision. On Thursday evening, the five-star set a commitment date of August 14, 2023, when he will decide between Georgia, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Tennessee. Each program has reason to be optimistic - the Sooners have been in this one as long as anyone and were a top-two program for him for months. Oregon recently got him to Eugene, Oregon, and that visit also went well. We'll see the decision in a matter of days, but things are about to get interesting.
