Lucas Gordon Dazzles, Longhorns Offense Falls Flat in 3-2 Arkansas Loss
ARLINGTON - The Texas Longhorns kicked off their season on Friday in a future SEC matchup against the Arkansas Razorbacks.
It was evident that the Longhorns lost their fair share of offensive production from last season's historic offensive season, as the offense struggled mightily for large stretches of the game.
After Eric Kennedy led the bottom of the first off with a single back up the middle, Texas failed to register another until the bottom of the seventh. That hit, though, got the Longhorns on the board as Porter Brown launched his first home run as a Longhorn to cut the Razorbacks lead to 3-1.
It was a pitcher's duel until the seventh inning when Arkansas finally broke through, scoring three runs on four hits. Texas starter Lucas Gordon showed why he got the ball on Friday night, tossing five scoreless innings while striking out six.
Overall, though, it was not a good offensive night for Texas. The Longhorns added one other run in the seventh, with Garret Guillemette scoring on a wild pitch, but they couldn't take push across any more runs in a 3-2 loss.
Aside from the three-run seventh the Longhorns pitching staff looked solid against a strong Arkansas lineup, which should bode well moving forward this season for a team that struggled with pitching inconsistency last year.
What's next for Texas?
The Longhorns are back in action on Saturday afternoon against another SEC opponent, as they take on the Missouri Tigers. Missouri also dropped its season opener, and will be looking to get back in the win column.
Texas takes on Missouri at 3 p.m. CT from Globe Life Field.
