David Pierce Reveals Longhorns Weekend Rotation
The start of the college baseball season is officially one day away, and the Texas Longhorns will start their season in Arlington at Globe Life Field in the College Baseball Showdown.
This week, David Pierce announced the three starting pitchers that would make up his weekend rotation. While it was essentially a lock
Friday: LHP Lucas Gordon vs. Arkansas Razorbacks
Saturday: RHP Zane Morehouse vs. Missouri Tigers
Sunday: RHP Travis Sthele vs. Vanderbilt Commodores
There was never a doubt as to who would start the season opener, with Lucas Gordon emerging last season as the next staff ace following the injury of Tanner Witt. Gordon finished last season with a 7-2 record and a 3.05 ERA, racking up 77 strikeouts in the process.
However, after Gordon, the rotation was an unknown. With Witt out until late April, Pierce tabbed Zane Morehouse and Travis Sthele to round out Texas' rotation.
The duo of Morehouse and Sthele were both bullpen arms last season, who only made six and three starts respectively.
Morehouse finished his season with a 3-1 record and 6.00 ERA and 43 strikeouts in just 39 innings of work while Sthele also finished with a 3-1 record but a 6.03 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 34.1 innings of work.
Pitching will be a point of emphasis for the Longhorns this season, especially with the amount of offensive production lost to the draft. This weekend will offer a glimpse into what to expect for Texas this season, and show just how improved this pitching staff is.
