Longhorns Land Baylor P Will Rigney From Transfer Portal
The transfer portal can be both a blessing and a curse, depending on the flow of players from your program during any given offseason. For the Texas Longhorns, the portal was a major boost to their season.
Key additions in Porter Brown and Garret Guillemette anchored a strong Longhorns lineup, With those additions the Longhorns were able to win the Big 12 regular season championship and came up just short of a third straight trip to Omaha.
Now, though, they regroup from a heartbreaking loss to end their season and look ahead to 2024. One key area to do so will be addressing pitching, especially a starting rotation losing Lucas Gordon, Tanner Witt and potentially Lebarron Johnson Jr.
They took a step towards addressing that concern on Friday, though, when they landed an impact arm via the transfer portal. Baylor pitcher Will Rigney took to Twitter to announce his decision.
Rigney appeared in 10 games for the Bears this season, eight of which he started. In those 10 appearances he compiled a 3-3 record, with a 4.18 ERA. He recorded 42 strikeouts against just 19 walks in 32.1 innings.
His numbers may not jump off the page on the surface, but he joins Woody Williams' pitching staff - with Williams fresh off turning the Longhorns into one of the best pitching teams in the country.
If Williams and the Texas staff can turn Rigney into a serviceable arm, either out of the bullpen or in the weekend rotation, then the Longhorns landed themselves a crucial piece to the 2024 puzzle.
