Longhorns Coaching Staff Staying Aggressive in Transfer Portal
The transfer portal has quickly become one of the biggest barometers of success in college athletics. Schools that can utilize the portal to their advantage, regardless of the sport, have found success.
This is especially true in baseball, where taking advantage of the portal has quickly become a necessity if you want to remain a competitive team. Realizing this, David Pierce and the rest of the Texas Longhorns staff have remained active in recruiting players in the portal.
Last season two of the biggest contributors for the Longhorns were transfers in starting catcher Garret Guillemette from USC and starting left fielder Porter Brown from TCU. Elsewhere in the lineup the starting second baseman, Jack O'Dowd, was a transfer from Vanderbilt.
Simply put, bringing in big-time transfers can help win. Which is why so far this offseason Pierce and company have once again been proactive in regards to transfers.
So far they have managed to bring in four players out of the portal. An instant impact outfielder from the JUCO ranks in Casey Cummings and three dynamite arms - Will Rigney from Baylor, Will Mercer from Notre Dame and Oliver Santos from Duke.
There is still plenty of time before the Longhorns take the mound to start the 2024 season next February. Between now and then there will likely be more transfers added by David Pierce and his staff - and if they are as impactful as Guillemette and Brown were, well, another conference title is certainly on the table.
