Maalik Murphy Officially Announces Transfer To Duke

Texas Longhorns quarterback Maalik Murphy felt it was best to enter his name into the transfer portal in hopes of having a better opportunity to start in 2024.
In this story:

With Texas' quarterback room being as full as it is this year with three starting-caliber signal callers, they were bound to lose someone to the transfer portal.

That someone ended up being former four-star Maalik Murphy, who was second on the depth chart this season. Murphy was reportedly receiving a ton of interest for his services following his spring game showing, but stuck around.

Murphy, like the rest of college football, was likely assuming that starting quarterback Quinn Ewers was bound to leave for the NFL after the season but there have been more indications of a return for Ewers.

So, following the Big 12 title game, Murphy revealed that he would be transferring, and four programs stood out as landing spots. Schools such as Oregon State, Baylor, South Carolina, and Duke were all in the mix for the California native.

On Friday evening, it was reported that Duke was where he would end up, and on Saturday, Murphy himself posted the news on social media.

Murphy started two games in the absence of the injured Quinn Ewers, leading Texas to victory in both. He has one of the stronger arms in the country but needs to work on decision-making.

He ended up throwing for 477 yards and tossing three touchdowns and picks.

However, had it not been for his strong showings and steady enough hand, the Longhorns would not be in the College Football Playoff.

At Duke, he is expected to be the first starting quarterback of the Manny Diaz era.
