Fans Allegedly Yell Homophobic Slurs At Longhorns Players
The then-No. 11 Texas Longhorns were putting the ribbon on one of the biggest victories in recent program history against the then-No. 3 Alabama Crimson Tide.
Texas defensive backs X'Avion Brice, Jelani McDonald and B.J. Allen Jr. danced in a circle on their sideline in celebration of the win. One patron took a video of the group, which also included running back Tre Wisner, and in the video, homophobic slurs can be heard being allegedly yelled at the Texas players.
The players were also allegedly told to "go back to the projects."
It is unclear who made the remarks in the video and whether any action will be taken against them.
Warning: The language in the video contains homophobic remarks.
The University of Alabama told The Austin American-Statesman that they were "disgusted" by the "vile language and inappropriate behavior" at Bryant-Denny Stadium Saturday.
"To be clear, we condemn this behavior and it will not be tolerated in our venues," the university said in a statement. "It is not representative of UA or our values. We expect all attendees to act with class and respect towards others. Fans are strongly encouraged to report issues to our security resources on-site. Gameday and delayed reports are appropriately addressed and anyone found to be in violation of our rules and expectations will be promptly removed and may be banned from future events."
Wisner's mother, Angie Wisner, made a post on social about the incident as well, noting poor treatment in the crowd that included Alabama fans allegedly throwing beer and water bottles and getting spit on.
"The fact my son down there and they saying go back to the projects really just saddens my heart that as his mother no matter how old he had to listen to that! Love you, Son!" Angie Wisner said in a post. "But the parents went through this all night! Beer cans thrown at us, water bottles, spit! Disgrace."
Texas defeated the Crimson Tide 34-24 — their first home loss since Nov. 9, 2019 — rose to No. 3 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 Poll and will play the Wyoming Cowboys Saturday.
