Former Texas QB Casey Thompson To Visit Ex-Longhorns Coach Tom Herman, FAU

Casey Thompson could be headed to reunite with Tom Herman in the Conference USA.

Casey Thompson was offered a chance to start for Steve Sarkisian but never promised the title of QB1. Perhaps that deal was made with former Texas coach Tom Herman where Thompson snubbed in-state program Oklahoma to join the program on the Forty Acres.

It could be why Thompson is also looking to reunite with Herman in Boca Raton.

According to reports, Thompson is expected to visit Florida Atlantic for a recruiting trip on Tuesday. Herman, who was fired by Texas following a 7-3 regular season finish capped off by an Alamo Bowl victory over Colorado, was hired by the Owls to replace Willie Taggart this offseason.

Thompson, 24, initially stayed and competed with fellow Herman recruit Hudson Card for the starting quarterback job in Year 1 of the Sarkisian era. Card won the job during fall camp, but Thompson quickly replaced the Austin native midway through Week 2's road loss against Arkansas.

The son of former Oklahoma quarterback Charles Thompson, Casey Thompson started 10 games for the Longhorns and compiled a 4-6 record. He threw for 2,113 yards and 24 touchdowns against nine interceptions while also rushing for 157 yards and four more TDs.

Although far from being the main culprit, Thompson and the Longhorns posted the program's longest losing streak since 1956 midway through Big 12 play. Much like the ideals of the program, Thompson's second-half struggles were evident and eventually played a factor in close defeats against Oklahoma State, Baylor and Iowa State.

Thompson elected to transfer to Nebraska following the arrival of Ohio State commit Quinn Ewers. He started 10 games for the Huskers, throwing for 2,407 yards and 17 touchdowns against 10 interceptions while completing 63.1 percent of his passes.

Former Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule was hired to replace Scott Frost following a 1-2 start and changed the expectation at QB. He brought in former Georgia Tech starter Jeff Sims and promised there would be an "open competition" for the starting quarterback job.

Thompson also visited Auburn earlier this month and has reportedly fielded over a dozen offers since entering the portal on April 28. Herman, who led Texas to a 32-18 record during his four seasons on campus, is expected to be a significant player due to familiarity with the offensive scheme.

Herman pegged Thompson as the backup to Sam Ehlinger in both 2019 and 2020, often having both quarterback work first-team drills during practice. Once Ehlinger graduated, it was expected that Herman would have named Thompson the clear-cut QB No. 1 should he have remained on campus.
