Texas Longhorns Coach Steve Sarkisian Named A Finalist For Coach Of The Year Award
On Wednesday it was revealed in a release by the program that Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian is up for a major award.
Sarkisian was named as one of five finalists for the George Munger College Coach of the Year Award. The third-year head coach had his best season yet at Texas, and as a head coach in his entire coaching career. He led the Longhorns to their first Big 12 title win since 2009, as they absolutely throttled Oklahoma State. Following the Big 12 title win, the Longhorns also made the College Football Playoff and were a slightly better-thrown ball away from advancing to the title.
How Nick Saban Saved Steve Sarkisian's Life
The Longhorns finished the season with a 12-2 record, ranked as the No. 3 team in the country. It is the first time since 2009 that a Texas team has hit the 12-win mark, and just the fourth time a Longhorns team has had 12 or more wins in program history.
Sarkisian will learn if he has won the award on January 10, while the winner will be honored at the 87th Maxwell Awards Gala which is set to take place on Friday, March 8, 2024, at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia.
While the season didn't end in the manner that Sarkisian, the team, or fans had hoped, it was certainly a step in the right direction for a program that has been floundering for years. The Longhorns are finally back amongst the nation's best and will look to carry their success over to 2024.
