Texas A 'Hell Of A Lot Better' Than Oklahoma Ahead of SEC Move

The Texas Longhorns will enjoy one final season of Big 12 competition before running with the big boys of the Southeastern Conference starting in 2024.
In this story:

The Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners had strength of schedules last season that ranked 24th and 32nd, respectively, but let's take a look at the Southeastern Conference.

Every SEC team had a strength of schedule that was 36th or better with the conference making up eight of the top-nine spots last season. That's what Texas and Oklahoma are getting into when they move from the Big 12 to the SEC in 2024, and TexAgs' Billy Liucci thinks the Longhorns are more well-prepared than the Sooners for the conference switch.

"[Texas] is doing a hell of a lot better job than OU is in terms of preparing to come into this league," Liucci said on "The Paul Finebaum Show" Monday. "Sooner fans are in for the rudest awakening because they've been going — except last year — 10-2, 11-1, making the playoffs. They've been doing that because they've been doing it against the Big 12."

Liucci thinks it's necessary for the Longhorns to win the Big 12 this year with the roster and schedule they have to carry momentum into their SEC debut. If they don't, Liucci said he has "some red flags" ahead of Texas' conference move.

The Texas A&M beat reporter said Texas is out-recruiting Oklahoma, while also holding a current talent gap over the Sooners.

Liucci has covered the Aggies long enough to see the competition levels of both the Big 12 and SEC and said "It's a night-and-day difference" between the two leagues.

"Ames, Iowa, is tough to play at because the grass is high. Mississippi State's tough to play at because 40,000, 50,000 cowbells," Liucci said. "You got to avoid getting hit in the mouth in round one because this really is a 15-round heavyweight fight, not just every season but in the long haul."
