Steve Sarkisian Details DeMarvion Overshown's 'Awesome Fit' in Cowboys Defense
In their second season under coach Steve Sarkisian the Texas Longhorns took a noticeable step forward, especially on the defensive side of the ball. While multiple players had breakout seasons for the Longhorns, linebacker DeMarvion Overshown's career year was among the key reasons for their defensive improvement.
Overshown was seemingly put it all together for the Longhorns in 2022, recording 96 total tackles with 10 tackles for loss and four sacks. He also showed flashes of his coverage skills with five passes broken up.
His strong showing in his final season earned Overshown middle round projections in mock drafts, which is where he ultimately landed as the Dallas Cowboys selected him with the No. 90 overall pick in the third round.
Even though Overshown's role in the Cowboys defense is yet to be determined, Steve Sarkisian offered a preview of what that role could be in an interview with 105.3 The Fan.
"I think this is an awesome fit for D-Mo," Sarkisian said. "I worked for Dan Quinn for two years in Atlanta and I know the premise of that defense, and it's about running and hitting. It's about having players that are versatile and can fly to the football, that have a high football IQ recognizing situations as they come."
"All those things epitomize D-Mo. He can run and he will strike you when he gets there. He's very versatile, obviously a guy who played on the roof when he first got to Texas. Came down and played off the edge in space, we moved him into the box and then we actually put him on the edge and let him rush the passer this past year. I just think it's an awesome fit schematically and personality wise."
Sarkisian, of course, is referring to the fact that Overshown first came to Texas as a defensive back, a position which he played for two seasons prior to transitioning to linebacker ahead of his third season.
That versatility, though, will make Overshown a candidate to make a strong first impression early on with the Cowboys. He's shown that he can come downhill and thump a ball carrier while also dropping in coverage when asked to, which are strong skills to have as he moves into the NFL.
