Longhorns QB Quinn Ewers Named To Davey O'Brien Preseason Watch List
Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers was named to the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award Preseason Watch List, according to a release Tuesday.
Ewers is one of 35 quarterbacks to earn preseason honors and one of five Big 12 quarterbacks, joining Kansas' Jalon Daniels, UCF's John Rhys Plumlee, Kansas State's Will Howard and Oklahoma's Dillon Gabriel. Reigning Heisman Trophy winner, USC quarterback Caleb Williams, headlines the group that also features 15 of last season's semifinalists, including LSU's Jayden Daniels, North Carolina's Drake Maye, Oregon's Bo Nix, Washington's Michael Penix Jr. and Michigan's J.J. McCarthy.
In addition to the Davey O'Brien, Ewers was named to the Maxwell Award Watch List July 31.
Ewers' first season on the Forty Acres didn't go according to plan, battling injuries and inconsistent play.
The Southlake, TX. native completed 58.1 percent of his 296 pass attempts for 2,177 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions last year.
Ewers has high expectations ahead of 2023 with an array of wide receivers in Xavier Worthy, Adonai Mitchell, Jordan Whittington, Isaiah Neyor and Johntay Cook II as well as tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders to throw to. Ewers is also in his second year in head coach Steve Sarkisian's offensive system, which will likely result in more comfortability and familiarity with the playbook and scheme.
The Davey O'Brien Midseason Watch will be released Oct. 17, semifinalists will be announced Nov. 7 and three finalists will be named Nov. 21. The winner will be announced live on ESPN's "The Home Depot College Football Awards" show Dec. 7.
Texas has had two quarterbacks win the award, as Vince Young took home the award in 2005 and Colt McCoy won it in 2009. Running back Earl Campbell won the Davey O'Brien in 1977 when the award recognized the best player in the southwest.
