Longhorns' Steve Sarkisian Brags About WR Corps: 'Can't Double Everybody!'
AUSTIN, Texas -- If the Texas Longhorns want to make the most of their final season in the Big 12 while living up to the expectation of winning the conference, they'll need the offense to hit another level of production.
Luckily, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian's plan seems simple enough. With an abundance of receiving talent at his disposal from both returners and newcomers, defenses could have little choice but to leave a cornerback stuck in a one-on-one scenario.
And after raving about new Longhorns like freshman Johntay Cook and transfer A.D. Mitchell while continuing praise for guys like Xavier Worthy, Jordan Whittington and Isaiah Neyor, it's clear that Sarkisian likes the offense's odds when this group takes the field in passing situations.
"For us, if we can deploy five people onto the field, you can't double everybody and load the box and stop the run," Sarkisian said Monday.
Sarkisian, who is entering his third year as Texas' head coach, even admitted that the team finally "got it right" this offseason in regards to building a roster of potent offensive weapons. Ideally, talented players like this will benefit the flow of the entire offense from quarterback Quinn Ewers to the group of talented running backs that are set to form a new-look backfield.
"I think that's something that we've been trying to build towards on our roster. We feel like we kinda got it right this year," Sarkisian said. "And now, the quarterback understanding distributing the ball and getting those guys the ball in space. ... They're hard tackles in space."
Of course, coach talk could remain just that: coach talk. But with only days until the start of the season, Sarkisian has seen enough of his receivers this offseason to display some supreme confidence in their abilities.
