Vince Young Puts Longhorns on Blast at Practice: 'You Ain't Ready!'
AUSTIN, Texas -- Expectations are higher for the Texas Longhorns entering this season than they've been in quite some time, so it's fitting that the start of fall camp on Wednesday featured the presence of all-time program royalty.
But legendary Texas quarterback Vince Young was hardly acting royal as he stood on the sideline watching practice unfold.
Young brought his best trash-talk game Wednesday, calling out players for mistakes and lack of hustle, per Horns247. It's the kind of tough-nosed motivational approach that coach Steve Sarkisian's team needs this season if they want to do things like beat Alabama on the road, win a Big 12 title and become a realistic contender for a College Football Playoff spot.
"V.Y. was getting on the guys," Sarkisian said, per Horns247. "He was yelling, 'Coach, we've got a walker over here.' And he was yelling out their numbers. I'll have to go back and look at some old tape to see if Vince was always running into the bubble for sprints."
Young reportedly called out freshman running back C.J. Baxter, who fixes to have a major role out of the backfield this season. But Young had his motivational tactics ready, humbling the youngster in a way that might help him later on in the year.
“You ain’t ready rook!” Young yelled at Baxter.
The same energy was kept for Georgia transfer receiver A.D. Mitchell, who apparently dropped a pass in a way that didn't sit well with Young.
“That’s 20 pushups, Mitchell! Be accountable!" Young told Mitchell, per Horns247.
If the Longhorns want to reach the heights they expect of themselves, then listening to a Texas legend like Young will certainly benefit. It's safe to say that Sarkisian wouldn't mind him hanging around at a few more practices as the season creeps closer.
