Longhorns DL Sydir Mitchell Suffers Injury at Practice, Gets MRI
AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Longhorns could potentially be without one of their top freshman once the regular season begins.
Per reports from Horns247, Texas freshman defensive lineman Sydir Mitchell suffered a leg injury during Tuesday's practice and had to be assisted in getting off the field. He reportedly underwent an MRI on Wednesday that will reveal the severity of the injury.
Further details on the ailment are currently unknown. But regardless of if Mitchell were to miss one game or several, it's a blow to both the Texas defensive line and Mitchell's development during his freshman year. During the Orange-White Game in April, he posted two total tackles, one being a tackle for loss.
Mitchell, a 6-6, 335-pound defensive lineman, committed to Texas on July 3, 2022 and was one of the first in the 2023 class to sign when he did so on Dec. 21 of last year.
He revealed why he chose the Longhorns over others.
"Coach Bo (Davis)," Mitchell said at Under Armour's Future 50 in July 2022. "How he is personality-wise and how he is coaching, the development is probably the best fit for me. They'll put me in the best position to be the best player I can be."
Through three seasons at Bergen Catholic in Oradell, N.Y., Mitchell wreaked havoc on opposing offenses. He racked up 77 tackles, including 14 tackles for loss and an impressive six sacks.
More news on the injury could surface as the season inches closer.
