Longhorns Announce Changes to Rodney Terry's Coaching Staff
AUSTIN, Texas -- With the roster close to being finalized and summer workouts starting to ramp up, the Texas Longhorns have made some changes to Rodney Terry's coaching staff.
The program officially introduced some new faces while revealing promotions for others. It's important to note that coach Bob Donewald Jr., who had been a Texas assistant since the start of the 2021-22 campaign, was not listed on the announcement. Though the team did not reveal an official departure, the Associated Press reported that he is no longer with the team.
Here are the announcements:
Frank Haith, Assistant Coach
It had been reported earlier in the offseason that Haith would be making a return to the Forty Acres. And after already getting re-acclimated with Austin over the past couple of weeks, the move is now official.
A Big 12 Coach of the Year and AP National Coach of the Year for his efforts during the 2012 season with the Missouri Tigers, Haith and Terry both served as assistants together under coach Rick Barnes on the Texas staff from 2002-2004.
Along with having a career record of 343-237 as a head coach, he also led Missouri to a Big 12 Tournament title in 2012. That season - which marked Mizzou's final year in th Big 12 - the Tigers posted the second-most single-season wins in program history with a 30-5 record, but the team was upset in the first round of the NCAA Tournament as a No. 2 seed by No. 15 Norfolk State.
Steve McClain, Assistant Coach
McClain served as special assistant to the head coach last season, but now officially moves into the role as an assistant coach.
McClain has over 40 years of coaching experience that he'll continue to bring to the team. He has 14 years of reps as a head coach from his time at Wyoming (1998-2007) and Illinois-Chicago (2015-20). An underrated part of the team's success last season, McClain remains a big piece on Terry's staff.
Chris Ogden, General Manager
Ogden has become a staple of Texas basketball during his 15 years with the program and will now take on a new role as general manager. He started last season as the team's managing director before being moved to assistant coach following the firing of Chris Beard.
It's unclear what role and responsibilities Ogden will have as general manager, but it's hard to imagine him not succeeding at it. After all, he played a vital part in the creation of the team's home at the Moody Center, which just wrapped up its inaugural season. Regardless of where Ogden's responsibilities take him on a daily basis, he'll continue to bring unmatched value to Terry and the program.
Brandon Chappell, Assistant Coach
Chappell will be entering his second season as an assistant for the program. Originally hired by Beard prior to the start of last season, he brings youth to coaching staff.
Chappell was hired at UNLV in April 2021 and spent just one season with the Rebels before electing to take his career elsewhere. A native of Beaumont, Texas, Chappell played, graduated, and coached for his hometown Lamar Cardinals.
After a four-year playing career with the Cardinals that saw him finish among the program's all-time leaders in assists (241), 3-point makes (140), and 3-point percentage (39 percent), Chappell eventually made his way back to Beaumont to serve as an assistant coach for Lamar for four seasons before he arrived at UNLV.
Before that, he had coaching stops at Armstrong State, Northern Arizona, and Arkansas-Fort Smith.
