Longhorns in Top 6 for Elite 2024 SG Tre Johnson

In what would be Texas Longhorns coach Rodney Terry's first full recruiting cycle, a prior relationship could help him land the best prospect in the class of 2024 in Tre Johnson.
In this story:

The Texas Longhorns have yet to land a recruit in the 2024 recruiting cycle, but could cash-in in a big way if they land the No. 1 overall prospect in the class in shooting guard Tre Johnson.

Johnson told On3's Joe Tipton that Texas is in his top-six schools along with the Arkansas Razorbacks, Kentucky Wildcats, Kansas Jayhawks, Baylor Bears and Alabama Crimson Tide.

“[Rodney Terry] and I have had a good relationship always. He was my dad’s assistant coach when he was at Baylor," Johnson told On3 of Texas. "We’ve always had a good relationship and him getting the head coaching job is really good for him. He also lets his guards play and also uses the bigger guards in the post. The players (stood out on the visit). They all stay in the gym and it’s open 24/7.”

According to the On3's Recruiting Prediction Machine, Johnson has a 27.8 percent chance to pick the Longhorns, which only trails Baylor's 31.8 percent.

Johnson has held an offer from Texas since Dec. 7, 2021 — the second-longest tenure to Baylor which offered him Aug. 1, 2021. The Dallas native took an official visit to Austin on Sept. 17, 2022.

The 6-5, 180-pound shooting guard from Lake Highlands High School was compared to Devin Booker by 247Sports' Brandon Jenkins, who said Johnson is a "polished high major talent with a tremendous upside."

"A long and lean perimeter prospect who shows a sweet stroke, Johnson is as true of a shooting guard as there is the 2024 class," Jenkins wrote. "He is tremendously skilled with an advanced game for his age. Johnson is a very good jump-shooter of the catch or utilizing the rhythm dribble and he loves the mid range game."
