Longhorns Commit Trey Owens Among Top Performers at Elite 11 Austin
AUSTIN - Texas Longhorns commit Trey Owens has the unique distinction of being the first in-state quarterback to commit to the program out of high school in the Steve Sarkisian era. As such, he will carriers a different kind of pressure than any of the other quarterbacks in the program.
And last weekend at a stacked Elite 11 quarterback Camp at Westlake High School in Austin, Owens lived up to that pressure, finishing as one of the top performers of the day, alongside a handful of other Power 5 commits.
In total, the camp had double-digit FBS commitments and the competition was so tight, that the coaches were unable to decide which of the prospects would receive and invite to the finals in Los Angeles this summer.
So who were the top performers? You can view LonghornsCountry.com's rankings below:
Top Performers
1. Hauss Hejney - TCU Commit
Aledo quarterback Hauss Hejney was close to perfect on Sunday, rarely missing a beat. The TCU commit displayed precision accuracy and plenty of zip on his passes. He was also the fastest quarterback at the camp, clocking a 4.46 40-yard dash. His dual-threat ability makes him one of the most dynamic playmakers in the state.
2. Trey Owens - Texas Commit
Texas commit Trey Owens was consistently on point on Sunday. Owens was impressive in his passing drills and put his strong arm on display. Trey's big frame allows him to effortlessly sling the ball at will, and throw it into tight windows. This season, Owens hopes to lead the Cy Fair Bobcats back to the playoffs to avenge their loss in the area round to Cinco Ranch.
3. DJ Lagway - Florida Commit
Florida commit DJ Lagway has a cannon. Throw after throw, he was able to launch the football down the field with ease, showing why he is the highest-ranked quarterback in Texas. He effortlessly hit throw after throw on all levels of the field, especially deep passes. DJ will be a problem for opposing defenses this season before becoming a Florida Gator.
4. Micheal Hawkins Jr. - Oklahoma Commit
Oklahoma commit Micheal Hawkins Jr. had a great day on Sunday, displaying his quick feet and speedy release. Hawkins excels under pressure and is good at making plays when forced out of the pocket. After playing for Allen for two years, he will look to lead Frisco Emerson high school to the playoffs before he leaves for Oklahoma.
5. Marcos Davila - Purdue Commit
On Sunday, Marcos Davila showcased why he has over 20 division one offers. Davila was consistent with his arm and was good at limiting mistakes. His 6’3 frame allows him to throw with good velocity while also maintaining superior accuracy. The Purdue commit will certainly give defenses a run for their money this season at Midland Legacy High School.
Honorable Mentions
Paxton Land - Uncommitted
Land was one of the most accurate passers in the short and intermediate games in the cam, and picked up a lot of steam as the day went along. He particularly stood out when throwing on the move. Land currently holds an offer from UAB, but his recruitment is beginning to pick up steam following his strong performance at the camp. And as the starter for one of the nation's top programs in Austin Westlake next season, it is only a matter of time before the Power 5 offers begin to flow in.
D.J. Bailey - Uncommitted
The state championship-winning quarterback from DeSoto was one of the most consistent performers on the day. He threw one of the best deep balls in the group, and the zip on his passes was quite impressive. He will look to go back-to-back with DeSoto next season. And with a big 7 on 7 circuit and senior season, will likely start to turn some heads in the coming months.
