The Bruins are officially recruiting one of the top uncommitted athletes on the East Coast, even if they may have been beaten to the punch.

Class of 2024 safety Dejuan Lane became the latest prospect to receive an offer from UCLA football on Wednesday, the Maryland native announced on Twitter. Associate head coach and safeties coach Brian Norwood was the staff member who offered the Gilman High School (MD) product.

Lane announced a top five of Notre Dame, Penn State, Michigan, Maryland and Georgia back on April 29. The 6-foot-3 defensive back also has offers from Boston College, Duke, Florida, Louisville, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Rutgers, South Carolina, Syracuse, Temple, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.

At Gilman, Lane is a three-sport athlete. In addition to football, the versatile defender plays basketball and competes on the in track and field field. As a sophomore in 2022, Lane ran a personal-record 10.98-second 100-meter dash.

The 2023 high school track-and-field season is still finishing up, but Lane's season-best 100-meter time is 11.37. The junior is also a member of Gilman's 4x100 relay and 4x200 relay teams, the former of which finished in first place three times in April.

Lane is listed as four-star safety by 247Sports and Rivals, but On3 has him pegged as a three-star linebacker. In the 247Sports Composite, Lane is ranked as the No. 8 prospect in Maryland, the No. 26 safety in the country and the No. 286 recruit in the class of 2024.

Despite it already being in the later stages of Lane's recruitment, UCLA is making its push to try and swoop in for the highly-ranked secondary prospect. The Bruins are attempting to do the same with Mater Dei (CA) class of 2024 defensive lineman Aydin Breland, who they offered on Wednesday – shortly after he had announced a top 10 that didn't include the blue and gold.
