USC Football: Coaches Disrespect Trojans In New Poll Despite Win Over Buffaloes

USC needs to tighten things up defensively going forward.
In this story:

One of the oldest sayings in sports is that defense wins championships. And even in this new era of college football, where offense has taken everything by storm, the old age still rings true.

Teams must be able to get stops at some point during a game; otherwise, they leave themselves susceptible. Offenses aren't going to score every single drive, so the defensive players need to step up and do their part.

The USC Trojans have put together back-to-back shaky performances on the defensive side of the ball, and it has brought back reminders of how bad the defense was last season. Their lack of ability to stop anyone cost them a chance to make the College Football Playoff a year ago, and if they aren't careful, it will once again.

Despite getting the victory over the Colorado Buffalos this past weekend, the Trojans didn't look great. The offense was clicking on all cylinders, but the defense looked lost at times and unable to stop anybody. This performance saw the team drop down again in the coaches poll.

“The USC Trojans have moved down once again in the US LBM Coaches Poll despite defeating the Colorado Buffaloes on the road. The defense is a massive concern, although Lincoln Riley stated after the game he still has faith in Alex Grinch. We will see if the head coach’s confidence in his defensive coordinator is warranted, but that’s another discussion for another day. We can say this much: If USC doesn’t want to drop any more in the polls, it should play better defense.”

The offense, led by Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams, saved the day again for the Trojans. But this can't be how USC goes about things if they are serious about winning a National Championship.

"Bend, don’t break. The defense almost blew it again, but six touchdown passes from Caleb Williams should have him firmly in the Heisman Trophy driver’s seat."

USC will need to tighten things up going forward; otherwise, there will be more costly things than them falling in a poll. Playing against better competition, they will lose games, and if that happens, they can kiss the dream of a title goodbye.
