USC Trojans Football: Ex-NFL QB Hates Proposed Pre-Draft Approach For Caleb Williams
USC faces an uphill climb for the rest of their year on the gridiron after two straight losses in recent weeks.
The Men of Troy followed up their embarrassing loss to Notre Dame with yet another loss to Utah on a last-second field goal last week.
Quarterback Caleb Williams bears some responsibility in each defeat, but two losses have brought some wild takes speculating his future.
Williams is the presumptive favorite for the No. 1 overall pick in this spring's draft, but some mentioned that the passer should sit out the rest of 2023 with USC far out of championship contention.
In the eyes of former NFL quarterback Greg McElroy, such a notion would be both insulting and ludicrous to witness.
“Here’s what I hate – I really hate it, I really, really hate it. I hate when people who played the sport – understand what it’s like to be on a team, understand what it’s like to sacrifice for the greater good – tweet things out suggesting that star players shouldn’t play anymore
because there’s nothing left to play for
because the only reason why you play college football is to win a national championship or the Heisman Trophy,” McElroy said. “That’s the only reason? It’s not because the game is fun or because you owe it to
your teammates
to give them the best chance to be successful? Or because you’re representing a school, representing something bigger than yourself?

Controversial analyst Emmanuel Acho first posed the question about Williams' future in the immediate fallout from the team's loss to the Utes.
Though USC may fall short of their ultimate goals this season, they're still in a good position for a bowl game to end their year.
Williams hasn't indicated quitting on his teammates anytime soon, and we look forward to him finishing the year strong despite these setbacks.
