Isaac Wilson and Fellow Utes Commits to Play For Upcoming Utah 6A Title Game
The No. 18 ranked high school team in the nation, the Corner Canyon Chargers, take on Skyridge this weekend, Nov. 17th, in the Utah 2023 6A Championship game at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The game is shaping up to be a display of future Utah talent, as multiple members of the Utes’ 2024 recruiting class will take the field.
Corner Canyon has been on cruise control this season, boasting a 12-1 overall record, with the team's only loss coming from an early season dogfight (63-42) with the current No. 1 team in the nation, Bishop Gorman.
The author of the Chargers’ success is none other than Issac Wilson, brother of New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson, and 2024 four-star commit to the University of Utah.
Wilson’s senior season has been nothing short of otherworldly, as the quarterback has been one of the most efficient dual-threat game-changers in the country. With highlights good enough to back up his trash talk, Wilson has been slinging it all season long.
The Corner Canyon signal-caller has thrown for over 4300 yards this season (third in the nation), to go along with his 47 passing touchdowns. Moreover, he’s added another 1112 yards on the ground with 10 rushing touchdowns. In total, Wilson’s 5436 combined yards make him the No. 1 player in the country for combined rushing and passing yards.
In Corner Canyon’s 6A semifinal matchup last weekend (Nov. 10th) against Lehi, Wilson had one of his most dominant performances of the season, on the biggest of stages.
Under the Rice-Eccles Stadium lights, the quarterback threw for 428 yards, four touchdowns, and a completion percentage of almost 75 percent.
Besides Wilson’s undeniable knack for the quarterback position, some of his success can be attributed to strong offensive line play from Isaiah Garcia, the 2024 No. 1 ranked player in Utah and the Utes’ No. 1 overall recruit in the same class.
Garcia chose the Utes over schools like Oregon, Stanford, and USC, and looks to follow in the footsteps of players like the Utes’ No. 1 athlete in the 2023 recruiting class, Spencer Fano. Garcia also gets the chance to continue protecting his high school teammate Wilson.
"Isaac is a really good kid and he's a hell of a player; he's a really good quarterback," Garcia said. "When I saw him commit to Utah, I thought that was really good move for him. ... I'm really excited to play with him this year — started building a bond with him. I'm really excited to get up to Utah with him, and I think both of our futures are really bright."
Between Wilson, Garcia, and other Utah commits like Kash Dillon, an EDGE for Corner Canyon, Saturday’s 6A championship bout against Skyridge is a chance for future University of Utah football talent to show the Ute faithful their ability.
In other news, Corner Canyon will be taking on a Skyridge team without their head coach. Justin Hemm was suspended last week by UHSAA for violating the league’s rule on playing an ineligible player.
Skyridge was able to win their first game without their head coach, Hemm, last week against American Fork, but it remains to be seen if they can do the same against Utah’s most dominant high school football program, the Corner Canyon Chargers.
