Tracking Where All The Top College Football Quarterbacks In The Transfer Portal May End Up

The College Football transfer portal has us set up for another wild offseasonb
In this story:

With the college football regular season coming to a conclusion this past weekned, all eyes are now on the college football transfer portal, specifically for the quarterbacks.

While many contending teams may want an offensive lineman, defensive lineman, or receiver there are about 20-30 other teams if not more that firmly believe they are a quarterback away. To make matters more interesting, there is also the NIL factor which some programs have a clear advantage over others.

This class of portal quarterbacks is strictly only graduate transfers at the moment, but there are still a handful of extremely intriguing options out there. So, this will be an ongoing tracker fo where all of the portal signal callers end up, and will include projections prior to their commitments from 247Sports and various media outlets.

Here are the current most notable signal callers and where they are either linked to or ending up.

Nate Johnson (Utah)

Rob Gray-USA TODAY Sports

After being used sparingly as a change-of-pace quarterback, Johnson got the chance to start at Utah for a few games this season. He is a dynamic athlete who needs a little more consistency through the air, and will need an offense that is more tailored for his skillset. He will have three years of eligibility and is listed as a redshirt freshman.

Riley Leonard (Duke)

Jamie Rhodes-USA TODAY Sports

Arguably the biggest catch in the portal cycle, Leonard was viewed as a possible first-round pick heading into the season but aside from small numbers early in the year, got injured for about a month. He had just three touchdowns through the air and four on the ground, and reportedly entered the portal with the do not contact tag. Meaning, he has his destination picked out already. 247Sports has him slated to end up at Notre Dame.

Grayson McCall (Coastal Carolina)

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

The Coastal Carolina quarterback entered the portal after last season and was expected to follow Jamey Chadwell wherever he ended up. He opted to not transfer to Liberty, and was thought to be a target for programs like Auburn and Florida. He had his least productive season as a starter this season, but is still expected to end up at a big program.

Hank Bachmeier (Lousiana Tech)

Middle Tennessee defensive end Richard Kinley (0) starts to sack Louisiana Tech quarterback Hank Bachmeier (19) before Middle Tennessee defensive end Brandon Buckner (89) moves in to help take down Bachmeier (19) during the football game in Floyd Stadium at Middle Tennessee, in Murfreesboro, Tenn. on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2023.

The sixth-year senior started his career at Boise State where he shined at times, but his final season on the smurf turf saw him get benched. He struggled with injuries at times, and didn't have the impact at his next destination either. He is expected to be a take for a group of five or FCS program.

Tyler Shough (Texas Tech)

After a stint at Oregon and some positive moments at Texas Tech, Tyler Shough is among the large number of super-seniors who will be taking the field next year. He is a dual-threat quarterback who will get another chance at the Power 4 level, he just needs to stay healthy. UCF is a team to look out for.

Tyler Van Dyke (Miami)

Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports

Another quarterback that had first-round grades at times, Tyler Van Dyke has the tools to be a good quarterback but struggled to protect the ball this year. He threw more interceptions this year (12) than he did in the previous two seasons combined (11) with 10 of them coming in a four-game stretch that saw them lose three of four. He is viewed as one of the more attractive names, with programs like Nebraska or Kentucky being a landing spot.

Will Rogers (Mississippi State)

Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

Another one of the biggest names in the portal, as he ranks as the No. 2 quarterback currently according to 247Sports, Will Rogers will be highly sought after. He played well in Mike Leach's air raid system the past couple years, but the Bulldogs strayed away from that system this year. His numbers weren't as gaudy, but he will still command a large market. Kentucky is a possibility, and there may also be a chance of a return to Starkville following the hiring of Jeff Lebby.

Will Howard (Kansas State)

Scott Sewell-USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas State signal caller who led them to a Big 12 title a year ago currently ranks as the No. 1 player in the transfer portal. He's a big dual-threat quarterback who threw for 24 touchdowns and rushed for another nine. Schools to look out for are Nebraska, Washington, and Lousiville according to On3.
