Both UVA Soccer Teams Ranked in United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top 25
In the 2023 collegiate soccer season, Klockner Stadium will once again be home to two of the top college soccer teams in the country. Both the Virginia women's and men's soccer teams are ranked in the United Soccer Coaches preseason top 25 polls.
In year 24 under Steve Swanson, the UVA women's soccer team appears yet again to be a legitimate contender to win the national championship. Virginia is ranked No. 5 in the United Soccer Coaches preseason top 25. The Atlantic Coast Conference continues to be the toughest and most competitive league in the country, boasting seven teams in the preseason top 25, including five of the top six teams. UVA is joined in the top 25 by No. 2 North Carolina, No. 3 Notre Dame, No. 4 Duke, No. 6 Florida State, No. 14 Pittsburgh, and No. 25 Clemson.
Virginia is guaranteed to face at least three ranked opponents this season: No. 2 North Carolina, No. 4 Duke, and No. 25 Clemson. The Cavaliers will likely face even more ranked teams over the course of the year, especially in postseason play.
UVA went 16-4-3 overall last season and won three games to advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship, where the Cavaliers fell in double overtime to eventual national champion UCLA.
Virginia women's soccer opens the 2023 season at home against Nevada on Thursday, August 17th at 7pm.
The UVA men's soccer team is ranked No. 15 in the United Soccer Coaches preseason top 25, one of six ACC teams ranked in the top 25: No. 1 Syracuse, No. 4 Duke, No. 5 Pittsburgh, No. 9 Clemson, and No. 18 Wake Forest.
Virginia is scheduled to face three ranked teams in the regular season in 2023: No. 14 Maryland, No. 4 Duke, and No. 5 Pittsburgh.
After a couple of down years, UVA bounced back in a big way in 2022, turning in a 10-4-5 overall record, including a 5-1-2 mark in the ACC. The Cavaliers earned the No. 3 seed in the ACC Championship and the No. 4 overall seed in the NCAA Championship, losing in both tournaments via penalty kick heartbreakers.
As George Gelnovatch's Wahoos look to build off of last year's resurgent campaign, Virginia men's soccer will open the 2023 season at home against Iona on Thursday, August 24th at 6pm.
