Washington Earns Its First Commit of 2024

The Huskies ring in the new year with a commitment.
In this story:

NEW ORLEANS — Kalen DeBoer's coaching staff is working overtime in recruiting these days, with the Washington head coach tweeting out his signature alert that a commitment was coming just six hours before kickoff against Texas in the Sugar Bowl

The first pick-up of 2024 goes to defensive lineman Josiah Sharma from Inderkum High School in Sacramento, California. Washington was the first school to offer him in May 2023 and he decided to begin the new year by becoming a building block for DeBoer's 2025 class.

Sharma, a 3-star recruit according to 247 Sports, joins 3-star quarterback Jackson Kollock as Washington's two commits for the next recruiting class.

The 6-foot-5, 295-pound defensive tackle took an unofficial visit to Seattle in October to see Washington's 36-33 victory over Oregon and he ultimately committed to defensive-line coach Inoke Breckterfield over offers from Arizona, Nevada and Washington State.

Although Sharma hasn't received a ton of scholarship offers, his tape tells the story of a player with a projectable frame, athleticism and a very high ceiling.

As he continues to physically mature and add weight to his frame, Sharma looks like he could fill a role similar to what senior Tuli Letuligasenoa brings to Washington's defense.

He knows how to use his size to shed blocks effectively and does a notable job forcing ball carriers to select other lanes to run through. Sharma also possesses a few pass-rush moves and, while they aren't refined just yet, he looks like a player who could have a future as a three-down defensive tackle.

Over the course of his senior season, he could find himself as a big riser in national recruiting rankings in a year in which there aren't a lot of highly coveted defensive linemen on the West Coast.

DeBoer's staff has done a good job of identifying talent since its arrival at Washington and Sharma's high ceiling makes him a promising addition to the 2025 class.

I've followed the Huskies for my entire life, and to be in a position where I get to cover them full-time is nothing short of an honor. After graduating from Lasell University in 2019, I moved to Seattle to pursue my dream of working in sports media. While writing for the Husky Haul, I also covered local sports for the Everett Daily Herald before the COVID-19 pandemic. After being hired by Realdawg.com in February of 2021, I also transitioned into doing a lot of entertainment writing, as I work on a variety of magazines as a contributing writer for Centennial Media, and have also contributed to Emmy Magazine, as well as Walt Disney Television Studios.
