Wild Series Between Astros and Angels Joined Baseball History of the Last 20 Years
We already told you that Saturday's game in which the Los Angeles Angels beat the Houston Astros went down in Angels history.
But after the Astros came-from-behind to beat the Angels, 9-8, on Sunday, it turns out that the entire series made history, at least of the last 20 years.
Per ESPN Stats & Info:
The 32 combined runs in the 7th inning or later in the Astros-Angels series is the 2nd most in any 3-game series since 2000.
The Giants and Rockies combined for 33 in 2012.
On Sunday alone, there were 13 runs scored in the seventh inning or later by the two teams. The Astros got two in the seventh, two in the eighth and four in the ninth while the Angels got four in the seventh and one in the ninth.
The big blow for the Astros late was a Alex Bregman homer in the ninth. Shohei Ohtani homered for the Angels in their half of the ninth. That was his 34th year of the year.
While there's still plenty of time left in the season, all games are important at this point. For the Astros, they are trying to get back to the postseason in a loaded American League field, and for the Angels? They are trying to stay relevant enough to keep Shohei Ohtani and make a run. If they fall out of the race, they may need to trade Ohtani at the trade deadline.
The win put the Astros to 52-42 on the season. They currently own the final wild card spot. The Angels are now 46-48 and six games back.
