Los Angeles Star Angels Star Shohei Ohtani Made Even More History on Monday
Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani is making so much history that we can't even keep up with it.
Ohtani reached base five times on Monday night against the Baltimore Orioles, and in doing so, he did something that hadn't been done in baseball in nearly 60 years.
He also got the win on the mound, throwing seven innings at Camden Yards.
In turns out, Ohtani made even more history than we thought. As OptaSTATS noted on Twitter:
Nobody reached base more times today (via H, BB or HBP) than the @Angels' Shohei Ohtani (5).
Neither did anyone pitch more innings (7.0).
No other player in the live-ball era (since 1920) has led MLB in both categories (outright or tied) on a day with at least a dozen games.
What can you even say at this point? Ohtani is just the most freakish player we've ever seen in our lifetimes.
For the season, Ohtani is hitting .301 through 156 at-bats. He's got nine homers, 29 RBI and six steals. For his career, he's a .269 hitter with 136 home runs.
On the mound, Ohtani struggled a bit on Monday against the powerful Orioles lineup. He got the win and went the seven innings, but he gave up five earned runs and surrendered three homers.
For the year, he's still 5-1 with a 3.23 ERA.
At the time of this posting, the Angels and Orioles are tied 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning. The Angels entered play at 22-20 while Baltimore was 26-15.
