Miami Marlins' Luis Arraez Joins Baseball Hall of Famer in Elite Hitting History
Miami Marlins hitting savant Luis Arraez was in a slump entering Friday's game against the Washington Nationals.
After a series in Seattle that dropped his average to .378, Arraez went 5-5 on Friday in Washington raise it back up to .390. He continues his pursuit of becoming the first player to hit .400 in a season since Ted Williams hit .406 back in 1941.
Slump over.
Arraez homered and singled four times in the win, scoring two runs and driving in three.
With the big night -- and big season -- he joined Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx in some very special baseball history.
Per @OptaSTATS on Twitter:
So far this year, Luis Arraez of the @Marlins has had:
- multiple 5-hit games
- a 5-RBI game
- a 3-double game
- a cycle
Since RBI became an official stat in 1920, the only other MLB player to do all of that in the same season was Jimmie Foxx during his 1933 MVP campaign.
Any time you are chasing .400 and joining Hall of Famers, you are doing something impressive. Arraez likely won't win the MVP, as least as long as Ronald Acuna Jr. is also making history, but he is probably assured his second consecutive batting title.
His .390 average leads Acuna, who is second, by a whopping 63 percentage points.
The Marlins are 39-31 on the season after beating the Nationals and are 5.0 games out of first place in the National League East.
The two teams will play again on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. ET.
